Fowlers Bay
Fowlers Bay, 145 km west of Ceduna, is one of only two remote, unincorporated districts in SA with coastal frontage and an aquaculture industry.
It was from Fowlers Bay in the late 19th century that wool, surplus livestock and some grain from the then extensive Fowlers Bay and Yalata pastoral runs was shipped. Today the township is a coastal holiday destination, an attraction that sees its permanent population of about 40, increase to approximately double that number in the summer months.
Spectacular sand dunes that have already engulfed the old, original hotel encroach on the township from the west. There is a pristine bay, a jetty and good fishing. Much of the domestic water for the township that is not caught from roof runoff is supplied from shallow wells sunk at the foot of the sand hills.
The Progress Association meets on a monthly basis and is a good proactive committee with its main fundraising activity being monthly evening meals available at the Community Hall. Its main projects for 2013/14 include the completion of the Community Hall renovations and ongoing maintenance of the waste site.
